Located in Vancouver, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is an accredited, specialized, professional university that supports learning and research at the intersection of art, design and technology. The four-year undergraduate degrees in visual arts (BFA), media arts (BMA) and design (BDes), merge critical theory with studio practice. The Master of Applied Arts (MAA) program offers a professional degree that prepares students to engage in the expanding fields of design, media and visual arts within the cultural and creative economies. The MAA degree streams include full-time resident or low-residency program options.
Over the last 87 years, the university has had an enormous influence on the development and growth of the arts and design in Canada and internationally. Alumni and faculty are internationally recognized as award-winning creators and thought leaders who have enormous impact on both the cultural sector and economy.
Emily Carr encourages the development of new and innovative ways of thinking and creating within a university-based curriculum. At the same time, the university encourages students to prepare themselves for life after school. Curriculum is flexible, personal, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students. The university also boasts some of the most sophisticated online courses in Canada. Students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits, internships and an exchange program during their course of study.
Surrounded by water, parks and the coastal mountains, Vancouver provides a stunning natural environment and has long been recognized as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Emily Carr is located on Granville Island, an urban park in the centre of Vancouver, accessible by foot, vehicle, transit, and water taxi. In the 1970’s, Granville Island was converted from an industrial site with shipyards and metalworking shops into a colourful complex of studios, galleries, theatres, shops and a public market.
The eighth largest city in Canada, Vancouver has a population of approximately two million people. The city is home to a variety of industries, including mining, forest, biotech, and software. It is also the third largest film production centre in North America,
earning the nickname ‘Hollywood North’ in the film industry.
