Often referred to as the academic resort of Ontario, Laurentian University was founded over fifty years ago on a pristine 765-acre peninsula in Sudbury, Ontario – about three and a half hours north of Toronto. The City of Greater Sudbury, with a population of 160,000, is a growing city that has evolved into a centre for service, business, post-secondary education, mining, and healthcare. In this budding community, Laurentian University, with its unique bilingual and tri-cultural mandate, currently offers over 140 undergraduate programs (35 in French) and 29 master’s and doctoral programs in diverse fields, such as; management, health sciences, mining and the environment, along with specialty programs in forensic science, sports administration, midwifery, and human kinetics, among many others. In the fall of 2013, students will be enrolling in the first intake of the Bachelor of Architecture program that will be housed in downtown Sudbury.
Laurentian also has a rapidly expanding campus location in Barrie, Ontario, that grew out of a partnership with Georgian College. Through this partnership, there are now over 1,200 students enrolled in Laurentian programs in Simcoe County, in a series of management, social sciences and humanities and social work undergraduate programs.
Research currently done at Laurentian rivals any performed at other Canadian universities. From preventing the spread of malaria, to patenting early diagnostic tests for breast cancer, to environmental sustainability, all the way to solving the mysteries surrounding the creation of the universe – Laurentian is truly on the leading edge of innovation and ongoing pursuit of discovery. Its multidisciplinary breadth of research extends to 18 research centres, of which the new Vale Living with Lakes environmental research facility, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation, and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Laboratory – just to name a few.
What makes Laurentian unique is its blend of high-quality programs with a personalized learning experience – where professors actually know the students and help them achieve their full potential. As a matter of fact, Laurentian’s student-to-faculty ratio is one of the best in the country, with an average class size of 38 students in first-year courses, and even fewer in upper years. Laurentian students benefit from the expertise of innovative professors with broad, international experience.
Its 96 percent post-graduation employment rate within six months, its breadth of high-quality programs, innovative faculty, and wealth of research opportunities make Laurentian University a destination of choice.
