Lakehead University provides a singular educational experience to help students realize their potential. Established in 1965, Lakehead’s undergraduate and graduate programs offer its 8,705 students a perfect blend of social and recreational experiences for today with the learning and skills for a successful tomorrow. Graduates enjoy high employment rates consistently above the provincial average: 94.3 percent after six months and 94.5 percent after two years. Students benefit from flexible learning options including internships, fieldwork, distance education, and college transfer programs. Lakehead encourages its students to look outward through its study abroad programs with universities in eight countries. International students from China, Mexico, the Middle East, and across the globe flourish in Lakehead’s welcoming environment with its many educational and social supports.
Lakehead University has two technologically advanced campuses, situated in beautiful, natural environments. The Thunder Bay campus, near Lake Superior in Northwestern Ontario, is surrounded by the boreal forest. The Orillia campus brings the Lakehead experience to the heart of Ontario’s cottage country. This fall, Orillia added to its facilities with the opening of a 271-bed residence and cafeteria/bookstore complex built to LEED® standards.
Known for innovative research, Lakehead has seven strategic research areas: Aboriginal studies; advanced technology systems; biotechnology and material science; culture and society; environmental and resource-based research development, education, and policy; health research across the lifespan; and northern studies. Lakehead’s 12 specialized research centres and laboratories include the Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs. The world-class Paleo-DNA Laboratory is a pioneer in the field of forensic and ancient mitochondrial DNA analysis. Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus is home to the west campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). NOSM focuses on rural, northern and Aboriginal health incorporating an extensive distributed learning model. In September 2013, Lakehead is slated to open its new Faculty of Law which will focus on Aboriginal law, natural resources law, and small practice.
Although Lakehead offers extensive and diverse programs, it remains one of Ontario’s smaller universities and has a proud tradition of being a community-centred learning environment, where students are recognized, supported, and celebrated as individuals with their own goals and aspirations.
