세인트메리 대학교는 캐나다 노바스코샤 주의 주도인 핼리팩스에 있는 사립 종합대학교로, 캐나다에서 영어를 사용하는 가장 오래된 로마 가톨릭 대학교다. 1802년 에드먼드 버크(Edmund Burke) 신부가 청년들을 교육하기 위해 설립한 것이 시초다. 그 후 1840년 로마 가톨릭 교회가 세인트메리대학교를 설립하고, 1841년 노바스코샤 주의회로부터 학위수여 권한을 부여 받은 지 11년이 흐른 1852년 정식으로 대학교로서의 법적 지위를 얻게 되었다. 1913년에는 핼리팩스 대교구가 아일랜드의 그리스도교 형제단(Christian Brothers of Ireland)에 대학과 학술 프로그램을 직접 맡아 운영해줄 것을 요청하여 그리스도교 형제단이 대학을 맡게 되었다. 이를 계기로 대학의 명성이 인문학 분야에서 특히 높아졌고, 대학원 과정이 점차 확대 편성되었다. 1940년 예수회(Jesuits)가 그리스도 형제단의 뒤를 이어 대학을 운영하게 되었다. 1970년 대학의 관리 및 학술업무가 예수회에서 주정부와 학술위원회로 이전되고, 세인트메리대학법에 따라 공립대학으로 출범하게 되었다. 1992년 상학부의 명칭을 프랭크 H. 소베이(Frank H. Sobey, 1902~1985. 캐나다의 유명한 실업가)의 이름을 따서 소베이 경상대학으로 변경하였다. 세인트메리 대학교는 2005년부터 2억 5,000만 달러를 투자하여 캠퍼스를 혁신하고 지역 커뮤니티의 요구에 부응하기 위해 ‘과학빌딩 리뉴얼 프로젝트’를 추진하기 시작하였다.

2011년 기준 문과대학, 경상대학, 과학대학 등 3개의 단과대학으로 구성되어 있다. 인류학, 형사학, 영화학, 지리학, 역사학, 국제개발학, 언어학, 철학, 정치학, 심리학, 사회학, 회계학, 경제학, 경영학, 생물학, 화학, 컴퓨터과학, 환경과학, 지질학, 수학, 물리학, 천체물리학 등 43개 분야의 학사학위 과정을 비롯해 MBA(경영학 석사)와 재무학, 경영학, 응용과학, 응용심리학, 신학, 종교학 등 17개 분야의 석사 및 박사학위 프로그램이 개설되어 있다.

The new, interdisciplinary Bachelor of Environmental Studies program challenges students to draw upon social science, humanities and natural sciences in studying complex environmental issues.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers 15 master’s programs across the Faculties of Arts, Commerce and Science, one graduate diploma program, and doctoral programs in business administration, astronomy and psychology. A national leader in workplace health and wellness, Saint Mary’s CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety has more than 20 graduate students and one of the largest collections of occupational health psychologists in a university setting in North America.
