The 2011 vision and strategy for the university is that the University of Calgary will be a global intellectual hub located in Canada’s most enterprising city. By its 50th anniversary in 2016, it will be one of Canada’s top five research universities grounded in innovative learning and teaching and fully integrated with the community of Calgary.

The university supports 31,000 students pursuing more than 100 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. The university’s alumni family is 145,000 strong and boasts many top political and business leaders, researchers, and athletes, including Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Mozilla Corporation CEO Gary Kovacs, four-time Olympic medallist Kristina Groves and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

There are more than 400 Dinos student-athletes competing in 15 different varsity sports with great national success. The Olympic Oval, built for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, is home to Canada’s National Long Track Speed Skating Team. The facility is part of a high performance sports hub that draws world-class student athletes from all over the world.

The university’s main campus occupies a park-like setting covering more than 200 hectares. It is complemented by three satellite campuses in Calgary — the new Downtown Campus, the Spy Hill Campus that houses the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Clinical
Skills Building, and the Foothills Campus where the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are located. The university also has a satellite campus in the Middle East, the University of Calgary-Qatar.

The University of Calgary is an emerging leader in campus environmental sustainability and is one of only two universities in Canada to release a Climate Action Plan. The university is aiming to be a net zero waste campus and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2015 and 80 percent by 2050.
