1907년 서스캐처원 지방의회를 통과한 법률에 의하여 설립되었다. 1908년 댈하우스대학교의 월터 C. 머레이(Walter C. Murray) 교수가 초대 총장으로 임명되었고, 1909년 70명의 학생으로 문리과대학이 처음 개강하였다. 1912년 최초의 학교 건물이 캠퍼스에 건립되었고, 같은 해 농과대학과 공과대학이 창설되었다.

2000년 새 학기 현재 농과대학, 문리과대학, 상과대학, 치과대학, 교육대학, 공과대학, 보건과학대학, 운동과학대학, 법과대학, 의과대학, 간호대학, 약학·영양학대학, 물리요법대학, 웨스턴수의약대학 등 14개 단과대학과 대학원으로 구성되어 있다.

8곳에 있는 부속 도서관에는 161만 3000권의 도서와 285만 점의 마이크로폼 자료 및 CD를 포함한 3만 3764점의 시청각 자료가 소장되어 있으며, 8,533종의 정기간행물이 비치되어 있다. 부대시설로는 미술관·자연사박물관·플라네타리움 등이 있다.

2000년 현재 대학 재학생은 1만 5610명(남학생 6,614명, 여학생 8,996명)이고, 대학원 재학생은 1,760명(남학생 973명, 여학생 787명)이다. 교수는 1,030명이며, 그중 65%가 박사학위를 갖고 있다. 교수 1인당 학생 수는 15명이다. 대학 재학생의 평균연령은 21세이며, 97%가 서스캐처원주 출신이다. 신입생의 약 7%가 1학년을 마치지 못하고 중퇴한다.  

교내에는 밴드·치어리딩·합창·성가대·체스·컴퓨터·드라마·소수민족·동성애·정치·직업·사회봉사·국제문제·종교·신문·학생자치 등의 동아리와 동호회가 조직되어 있다. 새스커툰 시가지에 자리잡고 있는 1,469㎢의 캠퍼스에는 기숙사를 포함하여 55개 동의 건물이 있다.

특히 이 대학은1971년 노벨화학상을 수상한 게르하르트 헤르츠베르크(Gerhard Herzberg:1904~1999)와 역시 1983년 노벨화학상을 수상한 헨리 토브(Henry Taube:1915~)를 배출한 것으로 유명하다. 헤르츠베르크는 1935~1945년 이 대학에서 학생들을 가르쳤고, 토브는 1935년과 1937년에 이 대학에서 이학사와 이학석사 학위를 받은 뒤, 미국 스탠퍼드대학교에서 교수로 재직 중이다.

There are a wide variety of extra-curricular activities for students who want to round out their university experience. From the well-known Huskie athletic teams that compete in a number of inter-university sports to less formal clubs, there is something for everyone. Those with a more artistic inclination can write, take photos or edit the student newspaper, The Sheaf, or participate in the choruses, theatre productions and ensembles on campus. From Welcome Week activities through to the end of the year, there is always something going on at the U of S. Students also have access to the newly renovated Place Riel Student Centre which boasts a variety of food choices, computer store, health and counselling centre, and social space.

Although very much the province’s university, the U of S is proud to call Saskatoon home. The campus is located on the picturesque South Saskatchewan River in the heart of the city, surrounded by a vibrant arts and culture scene, and numerous options for outdoor activities. The welcoming nature of Saskatoon’s 220,000 citizens and dynamic growth of the city spills onto campus and reflects in the university’s own energy and progress.
