뉴펀들랜드메모리얼 대학교는 캐나다 뉴펀들랜드(Newfoundland) 주 세인트존스(St. John's)에 있는 공립 종합대학교다. 캐나다를 대표하는 명문 대학 가운데 하나로 평가를 받는다. 또 재학생 규모(약 1만 7,000명) 기준으로 애틀랜틱 캐나다(Atlantic Canada: 캐나다 동부 바다 인접 지역) 지역에서 가장 큰 대학이기도 하다. 중국 상하이 자오퉁 대학(Shanghai Jiao Tong University)이 발표하는 세계 대학 랭킹에서 뉴펀들랜드메모리얼 대학교는 줄곧 500위 안에 이름을 올리고 있다. 

뉴펀들랜드메모리얼 대학교의 전신은 1925년 설립된 메모리얼 유니버시티 칼리지(Memorial University College)다. 이 학교는 제1차 세계대전에서 목숨을 잃은 참전 용사들을 기리기 위해 세워졌다. 당시까지 뉴펀들랜드 지역은 캐나다 소속이 아닌 독립 지역이었다. 1949년 뉴펀들랜드가 10번째로 캐나다연방에 가입하면서 메모리얼 유니버시티 칼리지가 종합대학교로 승격했다. 이때부터 뉴펀들랜드메모리얼 대학교라는 이름을 사용하기 시작했다. 당시만 해도 대학에는 307명의 학생만이 공부를 하고 있었다. 그러나 이후 성장을 거듭해 1961년에는 학생 숫자가 1,400명으로 늘어났다. 1975년 뉴펀들랜드 주의 도시 코너브룩(Corner Brook)에 새 캠퍼스를 지었다.

대학은 예술학부, 경영학부, 교육학부, 엔지니어링학부, 의학부, 과학부 등 6개 학부와 음악대학, 약학대학, 간호대학, 인간운동대학, 사회사업대학, 레크리에이션대학 등 6개 단과대학으로 구성돼 있다. 특히 경영학부의 명성이 높은 편이다. 도서관, 학습자료센터, 미술관, 라디오 방송국 등의 부속 시설을 운영한다.

세인트존스에 있는 메인 캠퍼스를 비롯해 코너브룩 캠퍼스, 그렌펠 캠퍼스(Grenfell Campus), 할로 캠퍼스(Harlow Campus) 등 네 곳에 캠퍼스를 두고 있다. ‘메모리얼 시-호크스(Memorial Sea-Hawks)’라는 별칭을 가진 운동팀(남녀 농구, 크로스컨트리, 수영, 축구, 배구, 레슬링)이 활동을 하고 있다.

Memorial University of Newfoundland is Atlantic Canada’s premiere comprehensive university. As the only university in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is home to almost 18,000 students.

At Memorial University, students can choose from multiple campuses, each one being different. The province’s capital city, St. John’s, is home to the St. John’s Campus, the largest and most comprehensive campus of Memorial. Also located in St. John’s is the Marine Institute, dedicated to education, training, applied research and industrial support for the ocean industries. Grenfell Campus, located in Corner Brook, offers a more intimate learning experience and special expertise in environmental and fine arts programming. There is also a campus in Harlow, England, where many of our students find themselves studying the international components of their chosen program.

While studying at the St. John’s campus, students can choose from a wide array of undergraduate and graduate degree programs and benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth II Library system, one of the best university libraries in Canada. Students also have access to some of the most top-ranked, advanced laboratories and technology in the world, from science, math and computers, to languages and economics.

Located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the Marine Institute is recognized as one of the most respected centres of marine learning and applied research in the world. Here students can choose from more than 20 industry-driven programs including bachelor’s and master’s degrees, post-graduate certificates, advanced diplomas, diplomas and certificate programs.

The Grenfell Campus fine arts and environmental programs are a testament to the beauty that surrounds this campus. Artists find their inspiration in the landscape and culture of the area. Scientists and researchers strive to protect the natural wonder of the place. This small, spectacular campus offers a personalized undergraduate education in a realm of interdisciplinary experiences. The low student-instructor ratio ensures that individual attention is the norm and there is ample opportunity to get to know the faculty.
