매니토바 대학교는 캐나다 매니토바(Manitoba) 주의 주도 위니펙(Winnipeg)에 있는 공립 종합대학교다. 매니토바 지역에서 가장 큰 규모를 자랑한다. 캐나다 대학 중에서는 10~20위권에 올라 있다. 미국 시사주간지 가 매긴 2011년 순위에서 캐나다 톱20에 올랐다. 또 중국 상하이 자오퉁 대학(Shanghai Jiao Tong University)이 2011년 발표한 세계 대학 랭킹에서는 세계 톱500 대학에 포함됐다.
매니토바 대학교는 1877년 알렉산더 모리스(Alexander Morris)의 주도로 설립됐다. 1882년 매니토바 의과대학(Manitoba Medical College)을, 1888년 웨슬리 대학(Wesley College)을, 1902년 매니토바 약학대학(Manitoba College of Pharmacy)을, 1906년 매니토바 농업대학(Manitoba Agriculture College)을, 1931년 세인트 폴스 대학(St. Paul's College)을, 1938년 브랜던 대학(Brandon College)을, 1946년 세인트 앤드루스 대학(St. Andrew's College)을 각각 합병했다.
매니토바 대학교는 농업·식품과학부, 농학부, 건축학부, 예술스쿨, 예술학부, 클레이턴 H. 리델 환경·지구·자원학부(Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources), 치의학부, 치위생학부, 교육학부, 공학부, 인간생태학부, I.H 애스퍼 비즈니스스쿨(I. H. Asper School of Business), 롭슨홀 법학부(Robson Hall-Faculty of Law), 음악부, 의료재활학부, 의학부, 간호학부, 약학부, 신체운동·레크리에이션학부, 과학부, 사회복지학부, 공개강좌 디비전 등의 학부와 스쿨로 구성된다. 세인트 존스 대학(St. John's College), 세인트 폴스 대학, 세인트 앤드루스 대학, 보니파스 유니버시티 칼리지(University College of St. Boniface), 유니버시티 칼리지 등 모두 다섯 개의 기숙형 부속대학을 운영하고 있다.
메인 캠퍼스는 60여 개의 강의동과 연구소 빌딩이 있는 포트게리(Fort Garry) 캠퍼스다. 이외에 의학부와 약학부 등 10개의 빌딩이 들어선 바나타인(Bannatyne) 캠퍼스와 시민 교육 공간으로 활용되고 있는 윌리엄 노리 센터(William Norrie Centre) 등 두 곳의 캠퍼스를 별도로 운영한다.
The University of Manitoba offers a diverse range of programs, including a full complement of professional programs. It offers master’s and doctoral programs and opportunities for postdoctoral education in many disciplines. The university has special access programs for those who do not have the background required for university entrance. The continuing education division offers a large variety of professional and certificate programs.
Most students complete the first year of their degree programs in University 1, a unique approach to first-year university, creating a solid foundation for student success. U1 is a program that allows students to take the specific courses required for one or more faculties and schools, while at the same time ensuring there is good exposure to courses in several disciplines or professions.
A research-intensive university, the University of Manitoba is home to 40 research centres, institutes and shared facilities that foster collaborative research and scholarship including applied ethics, aging, cell biology, transportation, health policy, earth observation science and theoretical physics. These centres and institutes provide unique interdisciplinary educational and training
opportunities and are a valuable resource for the community at large. The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is one of Canada’s most production intellectual asset programs generating royalty income equal to 1.3 percent of the university’s research base.
The University of Manitoba’s main Fort Garry campus is nestled by the Red River, about 12 km from downtown Winnipeg. The faculties of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, as well as the schools of medical rehabilitation and dental hygiene, are all located on the Bannatyne campus in central Winnipeg, adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre, the province’s largest tertiary care complex. Satellite locations are situated in other parts of the city as well as in rural Manitoba.
